History
With over 2.2 million People killed and more then 9 million displaced, the civil wars between North and South Sudan are among the worst and most underreported humanitarian disasters of the 21st century. The current genocide in Darfur in Western Sudan is a clear continuation of 50 years of government-sponsored persecution of the disenfranchised people of South Sudan. After almost 3 decades of war, the people of South Sudan have experienced some of the most devastating circumstances imaginable. Education and health care infrastructure are in complete ruins. Health indicators in South Sudan are among the worst on the continent, including prenatal care, maternal mortality rates, child malnutrition, and immunization rates for children, contraception rates, unattended births, and doctors per capita. While there have been improvements in primary and secondary education efforts, the rate of repatriation far exceeds available resources. Disenfranchised individuals such as widows, orphans and the disabled have not yet been addressed on any significant scale.
