School Project

Our mission is to educate South Sudan’s youth, empowering them to rebuild a stable society.

The village of Dong is located in one of the poorest counties of Jonglei State in South Sudan. It lies 65 miles Northwest of Bor Town, Dong Village is a home of the Abek Sudd-zone. In just 10 years, Dong has grown from 3,500 residents to over 10,000. This dramatic population growth has overwhelmed the facilities for basic social services. The people of Dong currently have no access to a school, clinic, and clean water. The nearest hospital is suited 105 miles in Bor Town and it serves the entire State of Jonglei with over a million people. Dong does not have maternity ward and medical equipment. The hospital also lacks reliable access to clean water. Dongs’s only Elementary School consists of dilapidated mud buildings with uncomfortable seating and a limited number of desks, and the students must cram into the overcrowded mud classrooms.

According to the United Nations, Sudan has 2,400,000 orphans. About 360,000 children are heads of their households. Children living in villages who do attend ‘school’ are educated under a tree. Further UN research shows only 33% of children between the ages of 7-14 get an education. Girls have the lowest graduation rate with less than 1% of girls finishing primary school.

With 90% of the total population illiterate, women are the most uneducated sector of the population. Ninety-three percent of all women in Sudan do not have access to education. Only Afghanistan under the Taliban has fewer women graduating from primary school than South Sudan. With South Sudan recently succeeding from North Sudan, now is the time to make a change.
